This week as a group we decided on the colour scheme with the donated paints from B&Q and some members of group went to Recreate an art and crafts scrap store located in Cardiff. As one of the main aims of this project is to focus on circular economy. A circular economy is an economic system aimed at eliminating waste and the continual use of resources. Circular economy reuses, shares, repairs, refurbishes, and recycles materials to close the loop, minimising the use of resources – as well as waste, pollution, and carbon emissions. This is a really important element in todays society as there is a mass production in every part of the industry such as clothes, furniture, tools. Our buying habits have changed significantly due capitalist system, heavy advertising, cheap products due to mass production etc. Consumers are addicted to buy new things rather than repair, refurbish which really damages the earth. Plastic pollution and waste has decreased significantly compared to 10 years ago. Circular economy really helps the earth but also the people with less money.
As a group we started to go through the colour cards donated from B&Q to create a colour palette. As this was after the presentation after the colour schemes and different types of colour palettes we had a discussion as a group we decided we want contrasting colours which as bright playful and fresh. As the theme is about empowerment and maximalism, we knew we had to have wide range of colours in the palette which they all have to work together. I think this stage of the process of choosing colours and matching them was challenging, as a group we all struggled as there was variety of colours, so many combinations and potential paths we can take. It took us a while to decide on what to do as the teams were quiet big in numbers which means there was a lot of opinions which made it hard to make final decisions. The images below show the first few colour palettes we discussed and liked. There were 3 main bright colours and then we wanted 3 lighter shades for props maybe and for balance in the space. I liked the combination in the middle, I think the combination has mixture of darks and lighter shades. The dark green would look really nice as the wall and pink patterns on top with yellow could be a nice design. The green yellow and orange are colours next to each other on the colour wheel so they work well together, however I wasn’t sure on the dark purple it thought it could look too dull and disappear next to green.

After lots of discussions, speaking to Sian and interior stylist we all agreed to a final colour palette which you can see below. I am really happy with the combination we created, I think this really catches the Empower Up trend, fits well with the emotion and aesthethic of the movement. The colours are vibrant, playful and youthful. The dark blue and coral colour is my personal favourite, I think those two colours really stand out in the combination, they are contrasting energetic colours which grasps the trend. We also chose 4 light colours including yellow, light pink shade, light purple, light orange colour. The overall look of the colours they all work well, we can create smaller combinations using few of the colours on certain elements on the set. We want to have a canvas with geometric shapes, we can use the lighter shades such as yellow, pink and orange so it can stand out on the dark colour background.

The next step we took was to look through all the donated paints and find colours that are similar to our final colour palette. We tried each colour, mixed some to get the colour we wanted. Below you can see the final result of each and we managed to find each shade we wanted which is a really good result. I really love the dark blue, it was so vibrant and rich in colour, we decided that we want coral dark pink on the wall as well, we started to discuss what we want in the space, textures, forms props.

JOHN LEWIS
John Lewis & Partners is a chain of high-end department stores operating throughout the United Kingdom, created in 1864. The flagship store on Oxford Street began as a drapery shop, so there are very established in fabrics and homewares. As of October 2018, the John Lewis Partnership operated 52 John Lewis stores throughout Great Britain.
All three of these companies have been so kind and donated fabric and other materials so we can use them in out set designs. As a group we went through the materials and fabrics to see whether there are any material as that we can use in our designs. I found a very nice velvet green fabric that could look really nice as a cushion cover. We also found other materials such as really nice pink peach fabric that has short thin tassels at the end. As a group we said tassels would be really nice in the living space, part of the cushion or blanket. As it would fit the playful trend all these ideas we created a big moodboard which includes forms and shapes we want in the living space, textures and patterns. This gave us a clear idea of what we want in the space so then we can start thinking about props later on. The living was starting to shape up in our head, we were sure on the colour scheme as we decided that earlier on in the week.

As you can see on the moodboard for materials, texture, form, patterns there is a ket aspect of maximalism. For the texture and materials, we wanted to have tassels as we all liked the look of them on cushions, there was a key idea of colorful furniture either painting it full solid colour or legs each different colour for more playful experimentation. All the images show the thought process and our key main ideas. Then for form and shape we all agreed on geometric shapes on the wall, there was key images that influenced us such as circle patterns on the wall and patterns on sections. Then also, the first image on shape and form, these abstract irregular shapes layered can really work well with the trend it was energetic.
Another key aspect was colorful assemblage from furniture to decor, changes in colour and materials play a key role to enhance components. There is a whimsical and guilt-free approach to design. Asymmetry and purposeful mismatching are embraced in lively, friendly pieces, Miami blocking is also key aspect as it looks very modern, it’s clean and its inspired from Art- deco style. Patterns such as zig zags, geometric shapes as key concept ideas which is very significantly used in all of our mood boards.

This was the big moodboard we all looked at when we were deciding the colour palette, At first we all created our mood way of trend the things we liked then put it all together as one big group mood board. The moodboard includes all the details we want in our set design. The next step is the figure out the layout, the probs and we we want everything. I’m really enjoying the process, its something different from Graphics and always being on the computer digitally working. Creating moodboards is also fun researching about a new trend which I don’t have much knowledge is also challenging but really fun. As a designer working in a different concept really opened my eyes and at first i was thinking that it would be really hard for me to get involved due to my focus. However, I am really enjoying working together as a team, working with a different form is really interesting and developed a new skill for me.
