Interior Styling – Editorial Designs.

Digital versions of the editorial designs, I think they are really nice they really work well great with the images. It’s simple but shows the quality of the images and really stands out.  The other pages of the editorial gives information about the trend and sustainability. I think this editorial design can be used in advertising the Empower Up trend, or in a magazine that works closely with emerging trends and give people advice on what they can do in their homes, lifestyle/interior magazines will work really nicely with these designs.

Interior Styling – Final Images

These are the final images, I am really happy with the outcome I think we have grasped the essence of the trend, created a modern playful set design as a group fulfilled the concept.

These images will now be edited on Photoshoot as there is a tutorial with Keith for post-production. 2 people from each team will attend and then edit to photos for the editorials.

As I said overall I am very happy with the outcomes.

Interior Styling – Prop Making and Painting boards.

CREATING PROPS

Also we started to create the props that we bought from Recreate, it was a canvas and a vase. The vase was painted a layer of white then the light purple for good colour payoff and some zig zag patterns which is one of the key patterns in the trend.

77106970_442395230006587_1525016640540901376_n78096793_2674726959252741_3070884514080227328_n79137271_2167380936889816_8810345351488733184_n

We then started to make the shelves and cut out shapes from the cardboard and then found scrap pieces of wood to make the unit. We then found other pieces of wood in the wood workshop and painted each piece. The colours we chose was blue, peach orange and yellow. The blue would nicely blend in with the background but peach colour and yellow will break the harsh line son the wall and add more texture. The second piece has grids which we incorporated from the initial wall design.

77099243_2568135619969509_1889193458803933184_nIMG_917478844736_1672873532850055_5502406091805294592_n

Once the first layer of primer all dried, we put on a layer of primer then the first layers of blue and pink were painted. You can see the process below, we had the white tape to help us create a straight clean lines when painting. When the walls dried then the next layer of paint was painted so the colour pay off can be really good. Once the wall was ready, the next step was to add the shelf unit on there and start placing the props on the set.

78324014_790976291363151_1456362743660544000_n78950163_976970946001308_8396017746298535936_n

Some of the members of the group started making the tassels from knitting wools that were orange and  yellow. These hand made tassels will be used on the cushion or some parts of the curtain which we’re not quite sure on whether if we will use it As we realised the fabric we had is too thin and it wasn’t the best quality so like I said we solved this problem with paper pom poms hanging from the ceiling. The first image was also from the process of deciding which fabric to use and what colours would go well with the colour palette.

IMG_9150IMG_9148

The next stage was to put up the shelfs, we first had to drill each section and then we placed it on the top corner of the pink sqaure, this I feel like breaks the structured shapes, also the size of the shelves I thought would be too big as it was all put together it seemed so big o the floor but when it was on the wall it didn’t look as big and fit perfectly well with the scale of the wall. Once it was on the wall, we started to dress the set, added all the props we created and plants, objects we brought in. The first initial layout of the shelves are seen below, when we’e taking photographs we will be changing the layout and combinations for the perfect layout.

78981554_1018477025171742_253847268866654208_n79216324_954498974929083_5516754362065485824_n

This is also another arrangement of the shelves, we used some pots and objects from the Ceramics workshop scrap box, we painted them in the colours that we used in our set, they work really nicely with the colour of the shelves and overall compliment the design. We used 3 different colourful plant pots on the top shelf and then the plant with long branches on the left corner so the branches fall off the corner. I think this arrangement is nice but we decided to get rid of the plants on the right as they didn’t fit the overall colour as their pots had different colours and colours that didn’t feel like they it worked with the other things.

IMG_9367

Also, we decided to use the small coffee table which initially speaking to Sian she suggested it would be too small and scale wouldn’t fit in the set. But we decided we should paint it and get it ready in case during the photoshoot we needed it or changed our mind. Once it was painted I think the table looks really nice, it had patterns and colours really stood out.

78256640_2594848857248960_4220626682031112192_n79198026_531979974197953_7562257902862336000_n79329807_489808764966299_5590051268916674560_n

This was the final look of the set when it was all dressed with the props and decorations. I think at the moment it looks really nice but it will need changes when were photographing. We used two rugs, this is because the first one is peach light colour and we thought it might not be enough so we added a smaller rug which is blue so next to each other it can make it stand out. This is not the final layout of the set we will not photograph.

78636897_720751848417334_3713186118598918144_n

The only thing missing from the set was the pom poms , to hang these up we drilled a piece of wood on the top of the boards and sticked clear strings on it. The images below show the process of tying each of them together, i think the colours of the pom poms work nicely with the set.

We started to photograoh the set today, I think this process was the most challenging part of the project. The reason for this is because I didn’t realise how much detail we had to think about, each section of the set we had to move things, change props and experiment with different angles to find the best shot. At first, the main thing that wasn’t working out was the pom poms, the height and the arrangment of those took the longest, in every shot they were either to close together or the gap was too big so it took a long time, a lot of shots to do get the right one. We used clamps to help the gap between each one and as it’s not a lighting it was way harder to arrange it. Once we feel like we were okay with it we moved on to the next part which was the shelves. As a group we can see it wasn’t working well with all the different types of plant pots and ceramics so we took out a few things such as the two plant pots on the left, they had different colour and patterns which wasn’t working with the other materials. We focused more on the ceramic objects as it looked nice next to the vase as well. We then focused on the coffee table, plant and canvas which at the end we didn’t use the canvas. I think this process showed me how every little detail is important when photoshooting, the perspective really changes everything as looking at the set directly I couldn’t see any problems but when we took the photo some things didn’t seem right. It was a trial and error process we took a lot of shots trying to figure out the best layout.

Interior Styling – Layout Development

The next step in the process was to design the back wall and what the design will be. From the in depth research we did earleir I think as a group we all had so many ideas and thoughts about the back wall. We all searched through our personal mood boards and also the group moodboards to design few sketches and start experimenting. As we had a clear vision of what we are going to use on the design it was just the key of experimenting trying different ways and shapes to find the best one that fits the trend. You can see below all the drawings we did and we did have a lot of ideas and variations. As a group I think this part of challenging as we all had ideations it meant it was hard making a decision but I think we handled this situation very well. We all went around the group and said which ones we like the most, they all fit in with out trend so we all seemed to go with the 3 final ones in particular. The main idea was big circles or squares layering on the wall with small happens and shapes as seen on drawing 8, the big scale circle in the center and small circles layered on top corner. This is a design used a lot in the living spaces that we could see from our research. It isa  bold move, it’s energetic and captures the maximalist approach. The main designs we all liked and agreed was the 1st,  4th and 8th design. Then as a group we went around each member again and chose the one that we wanted and the final outcome was the first design. The off placed square and some grids but as a group we said let’s not add the grids so it will just be a blue background colour and the off placed coral pink square layered on top.

76697366_430132954342951_9144539428260151296_n.jpg

We then created digital version with the colours in our colour palettes, I think seeing these digitally we can clearly see which ones work the most compared to the rest. The first design really stands out to me the most. The contrasting colours really stand out, blue is so vibrant and the pink makes it very eye catchy and it will also make the room look more fuller and busy. We also agreed that the 3rd design of shapes of triangles we can use it on the canvas, 3 lighter shades such as the yellow, peach colour and blue so when it’s on the wall it will also stand out on the dark wall.

78434948_1057105504681367_1577393693701177344_n

We then next created a sketchup design to see what the room would look like, this was the first initial layout. I think the layout process will be really challenging and we would have to make a lot of decisions as a group. The first layout mock up you can see the wall design looks really nice on the wall, we wanted shelves on the wall as well but we thought it can look boring just 3 pieces of wood so one of the members designed this organic shaped shelving unit, the shapes all merge and fit into each other. Each layer has a shelf section where we can all add the props we bring and the ones we created. As the lighting, we thought we can create a paper mache lights that are different shapes and sizes. This can look really nice and also help the scale in the space. Lighting is something we all need to discuess as the group but for now we said we can make paper mache lights or plastic cups we found an image on Pinterest with white cups but we said  it can look handmade and not professional as everything else will be clean cut. That is something we said we can decide later on. Also, one of the members will be bringing in a  massice plant which will fill the space and create a homely feel. I think at the moment, the set looks really nice and the layout can easily be replicated. The colours seem to work together.

74967750_2492878440984349_5356271581905551360_n

The images below is the final sketchup layout design for our living space. There isn’t a huge difference in the layout or massive changes as a group we thought some things needed to change. An example, I created a paper mache light but the scale didn’t fit the set so we decided not to use it, so in that case we used big colour pom poms as lighting or decoration from the ceiling that helped the scale in the set. Also, the shapes of shelves changed a bit as we got the feedback that it looked like a tooth and it wasn’t perfect in shape so we changed it to more circular shapes and covers a smaller space. I like this design way more than the first one, its lot more clear everything stand out in their own way. When we photograph I know we will make a lot of changes in the process however it is good to have a clear vision of where you want things to go to start with.

Interior Styling Week 2

This week as a group we decided on the colour scheme with the donated paints from B&Q and some members of group went to Recreate an art and crafts scrap store located in Cardiff. As one of the main aims of this project is to focus on circular economy. A circular economy is an economic system aimed at eliminating waste and the continual use of resources. Circular economy reuses, shares, repairs, refurbishes, and recycles materials to close the loop, minimising the use of resources – as well as waste, pollution, and carbon emissions. This is a really important element in todays society as there is a mass production in every part of the industry such as clothes, furniture, tools. Our buying habits have changed significantly due capitalist system, heavy advertising, cheap products due to mass production etc.  Consumers are addicted to buy new things rather than repair, refurbish which really damages the earth. Plastic pollution and waste has decreased significantly compared to 10 years ago. Circular economy really helps the earth but also the people with less money.

As a group we started to go through the colour cards donated from B&Q to create a colour palette. As this was after the presentation after the colour schemes and different types of colour palettes we had a discussion as a group we decided we want contrasting colours which as bright playful and fresh. As the theme is about empowerment and maximalism, we knew we had to have wide range of colours in the palette which they all have to work together. I think this stage of the process of choosing colours and matching them was challenging, as a group we all struggled as there was variety of colours, so many combinations and potential paths we can take. It took us a while to decide on what to do as the teams were quiet big in numbers which means there was a lot of opinions which made it hard to make final decisions. The images below show the first few colour palettes we discussed and liked. There were 3 main bright colours and then we wanted 3 lighter shades for props maybe and for balance in the space. I liked the combination in the middle, I think the combination has mixture of darks and lighter shades. The dark green would look really nice as the wall and pink patterns on top with yellow could be a nice design. The green yellow and orange are colours next to each other on the colour wheel so they work well together, however I wasn’t sure on the dark purple  it thought it could look too dull and disappear next to green.

IMG_9107IMG_9084IMG_9082

After lots of discussions, speaking to Sian and interior stylist we all agreed to a final colour palette which you can see below. I am really happy with the combination we created, I think this really catches the Empower Up trend, fits well with the emotion and aesthethic of the movement. The colours are vibrant, playful and youthful. The dark blue and coral colour is my personal favourite, I think those two colours really stand out in the combination, they are contrasting energetic colours which grasps the trend. We also chose 4 light colours including yellow, light pink shade, light purple, light orange colour. The overall look of the colours they all work well, we can create smaller combinations using few of the colours on certain elements on the set. We want to have a canvas with geometric shapes, we can use the lighter shades such as yellow, pink and orange so it can stand out on the dark colour background.

img_9126.jpg

The next step we took was to look through all the donated paints and find colours that are similar to our final colour palette. We tried each colour, mixed some to get the colour we wanted. Below you can see the final result of each and we managed to find each shade we wanted which is a really good result. I really love the dark blue, it was so vibrant and rich in colour, we decided that we want coral dark pink on the wall as well, we started to discuss what we want in the space, textures, forms props.

They are a family run business who manufacture all their own kitchens and have 8 showrooms across South Wales, Surrey, West Sussex and Lancashire. Sigma 3 have a modern, state of the art 70,000 sq ft factory in Llantrisant, South Wales.

ORANGEBOX

OrangeBox have been selling work-based furniture since 2002. OrangeBox aims to enable their clients to work in new, more collaborative and more effective ways, and can help transform both the culture and efficiency of organisations. They have their own factory in Nantgarw, Cardiff. Orange box kindly donated bags of fabric which as a group we went through each bag and found things we can use when we’re making our props.

JOHN LEWIS

John Lewis & Partners is a chain of high-end department stores operating throughout the United Kingdom, created in 1864. The flagship store on Oxford Street began as a drapery shop, so there are very established in fabrics and homewares. As of October 2018, the John Lewis Partnership operated 52 John Lewis stores throughout Great Britain.

All three of these companies have been so kind and donated fabric and other materials so we can use them in out set designs. As a group we went through the materials and fabrics to see whether there are any material as that we can use in our designs. I found a very nice velvet green fabric that could look really nice as a cushion cover. We also found other materials such as really nice pink peach fabric that has short thin tassels at the end. As a group we said tassels would be really nice in the living space, part of the cushion or blanket. As it would fit the playful trend all these ideas we created a big moodboard which includes forms and shapes we want in the living space, textures and patterns. This gave us a clear idea of what we want in the space so then we can start thinking about props later on. The living was starting to shape up in our head, we were sure on the colour scheme as we decided that earlier on in the week.

74232864_2334802713315627_3196859504054501376_n

As you can see on the moodboard for materials, texture, form, patterns there is a ket aspect of maximalism. For the texture and materials, we wanted to have tassels as we all liked the look of them on cushions, there was a key idea of colorful furniture either painting it full solid colour or legs each different colour for more playful experimentation. All the images show the thought process and our key main ideas. Then for form and shape we all agreed on geometric shapes on the wall, there was key images that influenced us such as circle patterns on the wall and patterns on sections. Then also, the first image on shape and form, these abstract irregular shapes layered can really work well with the trend it was energetic.

Another key aspect was colorful assemblage from furniture to decor, changes in colour and materials play a key role to enhance components. There is a whimsical and guilt-free approach to design. Asymmetry and purposeful mismatching are embraced in lively, friendly pieces, Miami blocking is also key aspect as it looks very modern, it’s clean and its inspired from Art- deco style. Patterns such as zig zags, geometric shapes as key concept ideas which is very significantly used in all of our mood boards.

IMG_9120

This was the big moodboard we all looked at when we were deciding the colour palette, At first we all created our mood way of trend the things we liked then put it all together as one big group mood board. The moodboard includes all the details we want in our set design. The next step is the figure out the layout, the probs and we we want everything. I’m really enjoying the process, its something different from Graphics and always being on the computer digitally working. Creating moodboards is also fun researching about a new trend which I don’t have much knowledge is also challenging but really fun. As a designer working in a different concept really opened my eyes and at first i was thinking that it would be really hard for me to get involved due to my focus. However, I am really enjoying working together as a team, working with a different form is really interesting and developed a new skill for me.

Interior Styling : Introduction Week 1

Today I had my first lesson of Interior Styling, this project was my first choice when we were picking 3 projects for each term. This was because I am very interested in interior styling and when I was speaking to the project leader Sian on the Field Fair it sounded very interesting project. The first lesson was Sian introducing us to interior styling, she went though the brief with us. The brief had many submission requirements such as:

  • Individual Design Book
  • Group Scheme/Room Design
  • Group Final Set
  • Group Final Digital Photograph
  • Group Final Copy
  • Group Final Presentation/Video
  • Individual Blog (final 300 word reflective statement)

The brief:

‘From Design to Pro to Space to Content’

The project was to using recycled/upcycled materials, life size sets will be filled with probs created by us. They can be from donated materials from the Industry Sponsor-taking consideration colour, pattern, texture. material, and form. We were also expected to professionally photograph the set in a studio environment.

We were allocated to groups of 7-8 and were given a theme/trend related to interior styling. The trend we were given was Empower Up! Living Space SS20.This is a very bright busy trend is completely opposite of my personal interest however I think this will be really interesting to get out of my comfort zone and create a style of designs that is something usually wouldn’t carry out. We were told to research about the recent trends we should be using a data base called WGSN which can be accessed through Cardiff met search. Also, the project focuses heavily on recycled/upcycyled materials so we are not allowed to purchase protects materials p paints for our set designs. For this, as a group we will need to discuss ways to approach this and bring in things we already own and do not want to us anymore or visit a junk shop which is already in the brief.

Screen Shot 2019-11-18 at 2.13.27 PM.png

The next step was to individually create a mood board that is focused on our trend using the information on WGSN as there are several sections in the trend, there is lifestyle, interior, colour palettes and the key reasons behind this trend.

Screen Shot 2019-11-12 at 12.20.41 PM.png

This is the first mood board I created inspired by the trend. As colour is the main focus i used several different colour schemes and materials that can be used in our set designs. The main focus is patterns in some photos as as a group we want to use patterns with blocks of colours inspired by the Miami blocking which is a characteristics of the Empower Up trend. This trend focuses on optimism, energy and change. They focus  on playful, creativity, maximalism outlook that portrays the energy of the youth in today’s society. The report on WGSN shows it is  influenced by many factors in society, culture, politics and environment. One of the main influence is Indigenous-inspired design emerging across interiors, as indigenous Australian, African, Latin American and Native American creative scenes reach a global audience via digital connectivity. The rich diversity of these influences is referenced in contemporary ways across graphics and shapes, and materials and details. Small and large-scale market players are empowering this shift via collaborations, partnerships and locally focused events. There is also the heavy focus on striped/spliced patterns. The bands and geometries define the rhythm of both pattern and construction as they compose, splice and mismatch elements in vibrant yet orderly designs.

The key materials:

The first lecture heavily focused on designing with colour and different colour palettes. We were told to decide whether we want a warm colour platte, a neutral colour palette or vibrant colour platte depending out the our trend. The colour palette that fits in with the trend is a vibrant colour palette. Also, focuses on colour combinations we had to think about what kind of colour palette we want to create, the main focus was contrasting colour palette as the trend involves so many vibrant colours working together but the main trend I can see was there are few bright bold colours and also few light pastel shades and tints to create a balance.

As a group we have a lot of discuss and make decisions as it is busy complex trend which each element needs to work well together. I am really enjoying it so far, researching about living spaces, current trends in interior, creating mood boards and being practical in this project will really help my skills as in Graphics i feel most of the time I am very digital on my laptop. I don’t really try out new mediums or get practical so with this project there is a sketchbook and learning journal requirements but the most important is the set design which as a group we will be designing and making for few weeks. My  initial thought about the project before the  brief lecture was that we would be creating fabric designs, printing but it was heavily focused on set design which is also very interesting.

BRANDING PROJECT.

I think this project was a huge step up first year. When we first had the brief I realised the work load this year will more as  we were expected to delivery more outcomes. However, the project content was really good creating an exhibition branding is something I never designed before. I started off the project was researching on each theme which did take me long the themes were broad and we could potential base the  project on anything we liked. i chose to do modify because  it gave me more freedom so I  could focus on several different topics. I chose to to data collection as my exhibition, and I am very happy with my topic and the outcome  but during the process I really struggled with several things and i think this is why the project really challenging me. The most challenging element was figuring out the topic and also what the exhibition content. Figuring out a name and topic was not enough because we are being expected to create booklets about inside the exhibition so we had to visually everything about the  exhibition. As I struggled a lot with the content inside and i was panicking because of the amount of deliverables.  I wasted time during the process. Towards the end, I was rushing to get the deliverables completed which I am still still happy with all the outcomes but it was very stressful due to lack of time. I thin this project really challenged not my ability to creativity but time management, organizing skill and decision making. It was a hard way to start the second year but now i know areas that I should improve about my working method which I guess is the main benefit .

On Display – Animated moving identity and development.

As the animated video I didn’t have the time to explore different designs and effects on After Effects. Before I started to work on After Effects I had an idea of the animated video that there  would be several shapes moving side to side the screen and that the word ‘terms and conditions’ would appear at the end and change colours. So I started to design this on After effects which I think worked out well. As I attended the After effects tutorial from Matt the week before so I was pretty confident with the basics of moving shapes. The images below show the process of creating the video. I know I should’ve experimented more and that I have a lot to improve on in the video however I ran out out of time toward the end of the projects and that is something I will improve for next coming projects.

FINAL MOVING IDENTITY.

On Display – Promotional installations and tickets.

As a deliverables we had to create promotional installations for our exhibition. I used mock ups from bus stops so show the exhibition posters would be seen as. I think the posters are really eye catching for someone that is standing at the bus stop. I used two of the posters I designed for the exhibition to show how it would be displayed.

I also created more mock ups and the image below show the mock up of a underground. I created a new poster for this layout as seen next to the image. I used used layering of words ‘i agree’ which is part of one of the imagery in the booklet but I thought the phrase was very powerful and should be used as part of the exhibition branding. I did a simple design using layering of words on black background which is the consistent style across the branding process. I used Eurostile Extd Medium in blue. The powerful visual language is the ‘I have to agree’ in white at the bottom, the hierarchy of the poster follows as the eye starts from the top of the page and moving down the last thing is the ‘ i have to agree’. The words come off the page which also enhances the effect of repetition and sound seems like voices in repeat. The simple layout system then ends with the logo, date and location of the exhibition. I wanted to keep the main focus on imagery so it was catch peoples attention.

I also wanted to create tickets for my exhibition in the style of the branding. It wasn’t part of the deliverables but I thought it would complete the exhibition. Below you can see the first initial designs as sketches, I had already consistent scheme of patterns and words on the posters and other outcomes so I wanted to keep these designs very simple. Most focus on the gradient imagery and blocks of colour on sides.

DIGITAL DESIGNS.

These are the 3 initial designs that I mostly focused on . The first one focuses on the gradient in blocks as I used it in few other poster designs earlier. I used the image to cover most of the space on the page then a small section for the barcode, title, date and location. As I designed these tickets before designing on the final location of the exhibition, the address belongs to an old office building that was used by Cambridge Analytica. I used white as the background and blue gradient which has a subtle style than black. The layout is simple and fits the branding aesthetic.  The second design was aimed at the blocks of colours on the booklet designs. I used black background and white as main colours. I’m not sure on this design as it doesn’t fit the style.

On Display – Digital Presence mock ups and development.

I started off the process for the digital presence designs by sketching up some ideas, as I have a strong visual branding that is consistent in several outcomes I know the style the website should be in. The sketches show few ideas of block solid colours and text layouts across other pages. I will be doing few mock ups not the full website but you can clearly see the style replicated in all pages. I will be using XD Software to create the designs.

new doc 2019-11-06 15.01.40_5 The designs below are the first initial designs for website mock ups. I chose to use black background so it would stand out more and dark represent the severity of the topic. I used the same fonts from the branding cross the design. The image on the right shows the home screen of the website. I used a large font side for the name placed it on the left side of the screen, the logo is on the top right above the name. For the menu I used the simple style of lined across the top including ‘about’, ‘artists’ and ‘contact’. The date of the exhibition is on the  website in different colours and thicknesses. I also used the blue block shapes across the screen which moves from left to right when the viewer is using the screen. The blocks are filled with colour and some aren’t’ for more playful design. The screen is simple and work well with the branding. The second image is the mock up of the ‘About’ page. This page is in the same style as other pages, I used the imagery from the booklet on the left . The text about the information is placed on the right side with the large title. The design is not so structure it looks playful but the visual language still shows the context. I wanted to keep it simple and clear for the viewer. The menu titles have thin line of colour across to show the redacted style on the website design as it is part of the branding. I like the colour palette on the screen and works well together.

The images below show a mock ups of the website designs. I am happy with the outcomes I think they fit with the branding across the project, they are simple and playful. I don’t think it needed more text or imagery as everything stands out so much on black screen. I tried to create a contemporary style website design that anyone would be able to work.

The next step was to design the app mock ups. You can see below some screenshots of the designs for 3 key pages ‘About’ ‘Contact’ and the main screen. I think the first set of designs is what I will be using in the mock ups. This is because it works well with the rest of the website designs and overall branding. For the app design. I think i created more playful designs compared to website. It has more layering and text on the page but the screen is smaller and also I think lot more people will be using their phones to download the app. The design is simple and contemporary. The logo is used on the left consistently with the ‘+’ as the menu so it would work with the logo. When they click the plus the menu slides left where they have 3 sections of about contact and artists. The About page I used block of colours again moving from side to side, the text is in the centre slightly to the right. The date is placed on the top in white outlines which stands out so much on black background.  The third page is the contact which is very similar in the style, again using same shapes and texts. The second screenshot shows the first initial design, I used the same layout system but I didn’t think big block of shape works for the design, it had a different style than the website design so I chose to use the designs on the left.

This is the mock up for the app design I think it looks really good and I am really happy with the outcomes. I wasn’t able to do much development on the digital presense but I am still happy with the visuals
