FUTURISM
Research
For this project I’ve been given Futurism movement to research. Futurism is an Italian movement founded by Filippo Marninetti in 1909. Marninetti published his book ‘Manifesto of Futurism’ front page of the Paris newspaper Le Figaro. In The Founding and Manifesto of Futurism, Marinetti declared that “Art, in fact, can be nothing but violence, cruelty, and injustice.” George Sorel, who influenced the entire political spectrum from anarchism to Fascism, also argued for the importance of violence. Futurism had both anarchist and Fascist elements; Marinetti later became an active supporter of Benito Mussolini.
As the world was developing, Einstein and Planck was developing new theories, new means of commication was developing. Marinetti questioned how and why was art and design still so dull and old fashioned. He wanted art to be dynamic, keeping up with the modern world. Futurism movement with type has had an typographical revolution. Marinetti was breaking typographical rules and using type in all different weights, sizes to express emotions.

Filippo Marinetti’s work Zang Tumb Tumb was his first published collection of parole in libera (words in liberty). When you look at the book cover it’s very different to other artists works visually. The futurism style has distinctive features such as different sizes, weights of type faces symbolise different mood and feeling. An example thick and bold typefaces can be used to show loud noise. Also, it could show anger and voilence.

Futurism movement focuses on speed, youth, voilence, movement and technology. All these elements can be seen in most futurist posters using typography. The hierarchy and layout of the type is always the main focus. It’s very busy on the page and has no structure in a way. An example in Marinettis work ‘Zang Tumb Tumb’. The way Marinetti positioned them the are all balanced and it’s full of movement. Different weights, sizes of type works well together.
G. Guidi-Parole in libertà (words-in-freedom)
(1916)
Filippo T. Marinetti
This poster was designed by Marinetti. ‘Words in freedom’ shows how futurist style and includes all of the elements such as youth, speed, movement. The directon of type has no structure and it’s all about movement. The page is very busy, there’s no layout which creates the youthful feeling.
Fortunato Depero
Depero is another artist who supported futurism movement and applied futurist belief to all his designs. Futurists like Depero hated the oppressed system in Italy and despised museums and galleries and viewed them as aristocratic and ancient. He was a multifaceted artist, and his works span the realms of painting, sculpture, set and costume design, typography and advertisement. After releasing Depero-Dinamo Azari in 1927, a book known for being bound with bolts and which showcased his talent for graphic design and advertisement Depero moved to New York. He was the first futurist artist to move to US. This enabled futurism to expand from Italy.

New Futurist Theater Company Poster (1924)
The poster was designed by Fortunato Depero as the new poster for futurist theater. Deperos style is different to Marnettis as his poster has a layout and the hierarchy is easily identified. When you look at the design the first thing catches your eye is the large imagine in the middle. Depero create a simplistic approach but still use the futurist style when creating this poster

Deperos work influenced to use several colours in my work whick make the type stand out. After the layout lecture we had few weeks ago I can clearly see the layout Depero used in his designs which is very simple compared to Marinettis. Deperos designs are very abstract and againt the traditional layout and old fashioned book cover designs. I noticed he uses colours like dark red with black and white, these make the type and the imagune stand out and eye catchy. Also, the movement was all about being dynamic. Depero is using a modern approach when designing his posters.
LAYOUT IDEAS
Once I researched about all of the futurist posters and identified what distictives features they all have I started to create my own ideas which that would allow me to pick the one which would suit the brief the most and show the movement the most. Few weeks ago the layout and grid lecture has been very beneficial to me. We were asked to create few layouts using our movement and in that session I realised the Futurist movement has no strusture and it’s against all the formats. In the lecture, we were taught about how the hierarchy is really important when designing a poster as some elements in the poster should be emphazied. The hierarchy is very important and in my poster I need to make sure the everything is balanced. If the hiearchy is not good then the reader will find it hard to read the text and it could be too busy on the page.

In Marinettis poster the hierarchy is balanced, some elemensts are emphazied more than the rest of them. This enables the reader firstly see ‘Tumb Tumb’ then read the rest of the text. There’s type in different directions and different thickness so Marinetties emphasies everything on the poster using different font types, sizes and positioing
Using all the posters as an influence I started to create my own ones. The brief says the poster has to include 3 paragraphs. I want to make sure that the 3 paragraphs are readable however the emphasis will be on ‘Futurism’ as the header. Most of the futurist posters are all very busy on the page and there’s text in every direction in different sizes and forms so creating a layout is very hard. I then chose the 2 designs which I think will work well and with the futurist style.

This is some research I’ve done in my sketchbook. I started to sketch some layout ideas. This allows me to sketch all of the ideas I have then I can pick out whichever one I think will suit the project best. All of the layouts have been influenced by the futurist style which next page you can see the research about the style. All of them focus on typography and freely move around on the page. I was influenced by Marinettis posters as he’s the founder of the movement.

I carried on sketching more layouts and developing them which then I chose 2 ideas which I liked the most. They’re kind of mixture of all of my ideas. I like those 2 posters because I think it works well together and imagining it digitally I think it would lool good. The type is playful and floating on the page with no structure which is main aspect of Futurism. It’s going against the boundaries. I think the next step for me is to start creating these posters digitally on Adobe Indesign and develop them as I go along.
DEVELOPMENT
CREATING A LAYOUT

Once I finished researching about Futurism and futurist artists ideology and their posters I started to create my own layout ideas. I created layouts using Indesign and sketching them out on my sketchbook. My layouts I was influenced by the futurist poster by Marinetti. I focused on the hierarchy trying to have a balance of text and wanted to make it easier for reader. However, futurist style is very busy on the page, there is value of hierarchy but there’s so much going on the poster using type I found it hard creating a layout as there’s no strusture in most poster.

Then using the layouts I created two draft ideas played around with different type fonts and sizes to figure out which one suits the movement. The first one is below which Ideveloped it as I went along with it. This is because the first layout looked very empty on the page compared to how other futurist posters, it needed more type around text, and size of type had to be bigger. I like the first poster because there’s a lot of different size and font text going different directions. The changed the background from dark yellow to dark red. This is because the futurist movement is a political movement in a way with Marinetti being a fascist, so red would symbolise war and it woud make the poster stand out. As I develop the poster I could change the colour of text depending on the design.
These are my other ideas which arent developed. They don’t have any text or much development because I wasn’t so confident with them as the first one so I decided to keep them however mix of them together to see if they work well.
LAYOUT USING GRID AND COLOUMS
I used a grid sysytem to create my posters because it enables to see create a balance and see if one section is lot heavier than others. Also, i can see the margin and have a strusture to follow. This is another design which I used different elements from all of the previous posters. I think this one really works well as the way text is balanced in all areas doesn’t leave an empty space. I used ‘Futurism’ as the main focus and other key text is around the letter ‘f’. I used this technique from other futurist posters because it adds a detail. There is headers wrapping texts with different fonts which attracts the eye to the paragraphs. To improve, I think I can add another colour to make either paragraphs or parts of ‘futurism’ stand out more.
The white poster it was designed first week distoring text using wrap tools in Illustrator. Some futurist posters have distorted text which aren’t in its original form, distorting type really creates a futurist style as it’s against the rules and how other artists use. The used 3 coloums to start off and there’s a lot of white space. The header is the main focus and I created a swirl of text which is usedly in futurist posters, the text is always floating in different directions, or from other parts of the page with no structure. I’m still experimenting with text, layouts and indesign.
DEVELOPMENT – FINAL DESIGN

This my final design layout using the futurist style. I created my final design using some elements from other posters however I created a different and more detailed poster. First of all, the background I thought red was too bold and it was hiding all of the small details around texts so I used a lighter colour and red with black to make them stand out. I used 4 coloums which was very helpful as it allowed me to make sure everything is balanced. I think I used all of the elements in the brief and futurist style. Everything can be easily read and stands out. The poster includes different sizes and weights of type to show the futurist movement and style, when I was creating this poster I was influenced by Marinetti and Depero, there style is very modern and beyong the time period they lived in. I want to change small things such as turn the ‘9’ upside down.
