LONDON TRIP 2019

This week we had the London Trip which on Monday we went to a conference where 4 influential and successful designers spoke about there career. Overall, I think the trip was really beneficial to us all as listening to successful designers journey about how they go to where the are now is very inspirational. Each had their own style in their designs as well as different career journeys. I found it motivational listening to there struggles and way they deal with clients. Also, studio visit was really good. I haven’t been to a studio before so for me it was really good seeing insight into a studio, learning about how they work with clients and the process.

4 DESIGNERS CONFERENCE 2019

The first speaker of the day was Jack Renwick of Jack Renwick Studio. She gave a really good talk about how her graphic design career started and what she’s learnt all her experience. I think her speech was really motivational and very funny. She had many advices for us all such as keeping things simple, less is more. I didn’t take much notes when she was talking because I just wanted to focus in that moment. Her speech was one of the most influential ones for me. Another, designer who I was amazed by was Harry Pearce of Pentagram. I think his speech was eye opening and I was amazed by every story he told or the journey he takes with all his briefs. Especially the RA posters with Ai Weiwei. I was mind blown with the way he gains inspirations from his life, he made me realise that everything I need is around me so I need to just see it. Also, his book Eating with Eyes was incredible. Each designer had a different background and different approach to their briefs but that meant to me that you don’t all have to be the same,  Laura Jordan-Bambach is also really influential with her works about social topics and feminism. She is a passionate designer and wants to change the world with her book.

The second day we had studio visits. I chose to visit Onwards Studios in East London. I was really impressed with the studio. It was really beneficial to see the world of design and how a studio works. In the studio we were given a talk about how they work on briefs and processes they go through with each client. They are a small team I thought it’d be a big group working on each brief but they changed my perception about studios.  I think the work they showed us was really good. As the person who gave the talk was someone who graduated from Cardiff Met which was really motivational to me. It was a relaxed environment where we could ask questions and find things out.

EDITORIAL/LAYOUT

To start off my project I wanted to do research editorial and layout designs. I don’t know the style I want to use for my design  and the one which fits the article the most. So to research I used the resources provided for us in the launch brief as well as my own findings. All the editorial designs I chose are the ones I really like, some are very similar and some will not fit in with the article but I wanted to include them too.  Most designs are contemporary editorial designs.

These are the first editorials I had a look as influence. It’s very different to the style I had in mind for my designs however I think the use of colours and white space is really good. The visual hierarchy is very strong focused on headlines then the imagery which is all similar colours but low in opacity in a way. The use of shapes with bold colours makes the imagery stand out. The second design is more focused on the text, strong use of coloumns and bold type face. There’s no imagery which makes the reader focus on the text.  I think it’s a really good design, the colours work well together and doesn’t look too crowded together.

The designs above are one of my favourites. The use of white space with randomly placed blue tone photographs really makes them stand out. There’s not much typography only letters floating on the cover. There’s a clear colour scheme of blue and white in images and typography. All of the focus is on the images with no use of text.  If I was to apply this style to my editorial designs I would have to use photographs. As one of my ideas for imagery was to take photos of older woman to symbolise the woman in the article. However, I think I want to create my own imagery using illustrator or screenprints rather than photographs. However, the layout style in the design is very simple and clean. It’s not crowded with text or illustrations.

Another editorial design was this magazine design I found on Behance. The magazine included fashion editorial, photo essays and selection of area’s best food and drinks. It is a really good design, each page the pace is different however it makes you want to read on more. There’s use of block colours in some pages with lots of text, then some pages have a large image with a callout in bold type. The balance between each page is very well. I really like the colours and type choice it makes me easy read and focus. It’s one of my favourite magazine designs which a subtle style, how everything is simple and clean with  no use of extra bold, playful typography or imagery. Everything fits in with each other. However, for my article I’m thinking about designing something bolder, and darker tone.

Another editorial design which I really liked and found on Behance was a magazine called Paradiso published in Australia. Paradiso is a creative and independently made magazine every month. I think the style is beautiful. To me they are designing without any boundaries or rules. I love the type face used in these two pages as well as the randomly placed images which some over lap and they don’t look like they’re neatly placed on the page. The overlapping of type on images and text around the image are also very interesting.. There is a strong use of images to support the text. I think the pace is very strong as the two double page spreads are different yet similar in the style which doesn’t allow the reader to get bored or feel like they’re reading the same page again. The headline is always the main focus which then the text ‘Postcard from Paradiso’ stands out, the text isn’t centered which creates a playful style. Also, it’ creates an interest in the reader and doesn’t give away the context too much. There is a strong colour scheme of earthy colours brown, orange, beige. I think this style of editorial is suitable for more fashion editorials, articles about food and drink etc.

PrintPrint

This was the first editorial I found when I first started researching for ideas. I really like the second double page which had glitched black lines as background and small white text box with some text. I think the style is beautiful, looks very interesting. The first double page spread is really good in use of white space. There is a strong visual hierarchy with large image, then the headline ‘Fashion week Budapest’ The type face is very nice with the medium weight and fits in with the context. The style is very clean and simple. The pace is also very good, each page is different style but most pages are focused on imagery but there are playfulness with the backgrounds. The use of black and white creates a good contrast with the imagery as the main focus.

This is my favourite typographical style and one of the of influences for my work. I had the idea about playing around with typography for one of the double page spreads as imagery or background. As I was researching editorials focused on typography I came across Andrea Bianchi’s work on Behance called ‘I’m so f***king tired of Helvetica’. His idea for his work was to use new type faces which are not used by designers and over looked that they are ‘childish’ or ‘nonsense’. He wanted to show that typography has no boundaries and it shouldn’t be flattened. As many designers are always focused on type faces like helvetica as go to. His work shows how new typefaces are excellent and unique. The way he uses different typefaces is a style I want to use for my designs. This isn’t editorial design but I wanted to include in this post because it’s one of designs which gave me ideas and influenced me to use unique type faces.

1718

This is another design I found on Behance when I was researching about typography. I really like the glitched use of type especially the designs on right. I think these can be designed on Illustrator or photoshop using liquify to play with the type. As my article is about memory loss these kind of imagery will work with the idea of none of her memory is clear, in the interview she says she remembers pieces but there isn’t a clear full picture. Using typography to portray her confusion in this style could really work together. In addition, I think the main colours I will use in my designs are black and white. As the contrast between these colours makes everything stand out. When you look at these designs it’s hard to figure out what it is, it’s not clear. Especially the one with text it I really like the style of it, it doesn’t look neat or sophisticated.

In a Perpetual Present

I have made the decision of working on In a Perpetual Present article. I feel like with this article I will be able to challenge myself with a different concept. The editorial style I am thinking about this article is minimal, focused on imagery with type. I have started to research about contemporary editorial styles to figure out which style fits my ideas and fits the way I want to portray the article. I think In a Perpetual Present article has a clear light tone telling a story about a woman who doesn’t remember her past. However, as you read through the article questions start to appear in your mind which is hard to give an answer. I believe everyone who reads the articles, afterwards spends some moments thinking about the matter. So for this, style of the article will be hard decision because there are many important elements such as font, colour scheme, imagery style, grid systems.

The core message of the article as it says ‘Just how expendable in this supposedly essential part of being human after all’ . The article allows you to question, think about the essential part of being a human, how it would feel without all the memories that evoke different feelings to us. The writer uses parts from the interview to tell us her story with explaining us the her condition and puts it into context with the examples. Each part of the articles focus in a different area which makes it easier for me to decide the imagery in each section.

I have highlighted significant phrases which I will be using as subhead and callout. I believe these are very significant in editorial design as for an effective hierarchy they are one of the first things the reader will be drawn into. The callouts need to keep the reader interesting but also not giving away all the story. Some significant phrases or words I chose are ‘I know bits and pieces of stuff that happened’ the word ‘pieces’ gives me few ideas about type and imagery. Also, ‘Just how expendable is this supposedly essential part of the human after all?’ I could this phrase as the subhead or above the imagery which allows the reader to think about the matter, creates an interest especially flicking through a magazine it would be key part to draw readers in. There are other words which helps me with ideas such as ‘guessing’ and ‘assuming’. I start to think how would it feel or look trying to guess what you looked like 30 years ago or assume how you felt when you were married. All these thoughts could be used influence the imagery.

  • ‘She is unfamiliar with the feeling of regret and oblivious to the diminishment of aging’
  • ‘McKinnon hasn’t lost anything, she’s never been able to remember those experiences’
  •  ‘I think there’s a possibility that I might be one of those people he was describing’

ANALYSING ARTICLES

#METOO

I’ve read few articles about the #metoo movement in the past so I had an idea when reading the article. As I was reading the article I had few ideas in my mind about imagery and the tone of the designs. Reading the article, I was very intrigued about idea of groups in the feminism movement is against women speaking about their story. It was shocking to read about their opinions which as I was reading  I made some annotations about imagery and ideas for research.

Feminism is a topic which I have always been interested in and I created work in the past about this topic. I think there are variety of ways I can show the message of the article using minimal but strong imagery. Towards the end of the day we had to decide which article we wanted to do for this project so I chose Metoo. As a group we made a big mind map about all of our ideas and key things about the movement which we  research tat would help our idea development process.

In a Perpetual Present

However, once this was another article which was really interesting to read. As I was reading the article I made annotations of things that could be researched or any key things that came to my mind about the potential designs. This topic and the style I have in my mind for this article is very different to other things I created. I realised I usually stay on the social topics such as feminism, mental health. These are the topics I based my projects on for the past few months. In a Perpertual Present is an article whcih will challenge my style and will allow me to try something new. It’s also a very interesting topic. I think the style of the designs for this article would be very minimal focused on imagery and keeping the type very soft. The choice of font is also very important as well as the colour scheme. Reading both of the articles I believe In a Perpetual Present draws my attention and I want to challenge myself in this project. So I decided to change the article and go with In a Perpetual Present.

Once I made my final decision, I created a mind map just like we all did with the other article. Creating a mind map helps me see all the possible ideas, just my thought process. As a was creating the mind map I focused on key areas such as things to research about, possible imagery ideas, key parts of the article which needs to be highlighted in the designs. To start off the project I want to do research about dementia and read more articles to develop my knowledge about this topic. This will help me develop ideas and I always like to start off with research which is essential part of my working method.

CHANGING FACES

designing small spaces

Today we had the project launch for the last module of the year. For the editorial brief we first had the launch which David did a recap of typography, grids, layouts, font which will be useful in the editorial design. The workshop was Changing faces which as a group we had to design a double page spread of the topic that as given to us. Our topic was Designing small spaces. As a group we decided on what to have in each page, for my design I chose to focus on caravan renovations. However, before making a decision, I did some research on the topic. Most articles consisted of tip which was a good idea. However, I saw a blog about a couple transforming an old vintage caravan which looked tarted off the research with really interesting.

Once I knew what I wanted to do, we decided on the fonts and type size etc. As a group we all tried to make it similar so there’s a reoccurring theme. Creating similar styles makes it easier for the reader to understand and keeps them interested.

Designing small spaces

In the presentation, we had positive feedback from David and people in the class. I think our designing did look as one as we all used the style of small images around the page with blocks of paragraph around it. To improve I think I need to add subheading on some paragraph to fill the white space. Also, maybe more phrases from the article in bold font. In addition, we were told that the pace is very similar, David said the reader might get bored as it looks like very similar. Maybe a bigger image to draw the attention to it. Overall, I think it was a very useful workshop which was a good way to introduce us to the project. There are many things to consider in editorial such as hierarchy, pace which I will be doing more research to development my project. The recap about the editorial designs were very useful to remember the things we need to consider while designing such as columns, grids etc.

END OF FIELD 4

#TOOTOUGHFORTEARS

#Tootoughfortears was also a project which in fact I enjoyed the most. My team was able to communicate really well even though we were on christmas break.Working in a group process really helped me as a designer to meet at a point with everyone else and to adjust some of my ideas. My role in the group was to create a poster reflecting the mens thoughts and how they might feel about the  stigma on mental health in the society. To create series of posters I used my knowledge on Photoshop and Illustrator to create illustrations and use them in various poster designs. As a group I believe we created strong outcomes which all members of the team worked as a group. As the project was launched just before the break, we did most of our work back home however I managed to stay in contact with the group and update them on the stages of the poster designs. I received regular feedback which was motivating and supportive. In addition, next project I want to design all of the ideas digitally rather than pick one of sketched idea. This way it will show the development more effectively.  I believe I engaged in the group conversations, giving my opinions when needed. Campaign project was a good way to start the field which first we were with our course. This made us get used to the working in a group which then we moved onto collaboration. I really enjoyed the topic we chose and I think the topic enabled us to create detailed outcomes. As I developed my part of the project I focused on having a soft language and tone in my posters due to the topic which is very sensitive. To me, I wanted it to be emotional and make the reader understand what I’m saying. For this, I kept the posters simple and clean. There aren’t any big imagery or lots of text. Overall, I was motivated in this part of the project and enjoyed working with people in my course.

DE-GENDER COLOUR

Field was a challenging yet a good project. It was a task which we had work with different people who have different working methods and styles so for this it was really challenging at the start to create a group working method. The first week, I wasn’t much involved because the rest of the group didn’t communicate as well and I left lost. However, the oxymoron project really made me be part of the project and I became more engaged and tried to communicate with everyone. I think we created good outcomes in the end which shows the purpose of our protest very well. I learnt to be able to work with different people who have different styles as we all have to at some point after university we will be working with people from different backgrounds. So in that way it was very useful and beneficial to me.  This project we managed to create different outcomes for each week and this was challenging. As a group, I think we could’ve worked more effectively in some aspects so that we could’ve made more placards in different styles. In that sense, I think that’s something we all need to improve for next project. In addition, for next project being more organised will be my personal target as we left the screen printing on the last few days which caused stress and it was challenge trying to finish them all before the deadline. I feel that I tried my best to communicate with all members and spoke about my ideas and thoughts in the group. I used my skills on typography and layout to design placard which reflects the purpose of our protest. In addition, in those past 4 weeks I did engage with my team, attending most days to finish off the work such as screenprints, making the placards etc. I really liked the project Protest as creating outcomes from activists point was really interesting and oxymoron task was also something new and interesting to design. The process of field was really challenging as I mentioned before. In fact not the project outcomes but working in a team with people from different course and their work methods really was challenging. However, this was also a way for it to be really beneficial to learn about how people work which makes it interesting. At some point, our different styles clashed as some of the outcomes don’t fit in with others which it can be seen clearly. However, I think this adds a value to it as it shows individual style and how they see the project. Overall, I really enjoyed the field project even though it was challenging at some points but  I’m happy with the outcomes we all produced and created as a group.

FINAL PLACARDS

The final thing we had to do was do the final touches on the placards. The first placard was ‘REAL MEN DON’T WEAR PINK’. Which we screen printed on few days ago. The pink cross on the print was added once it was all dry. The reason we chose pink was because as the purpose of the protest is go against the rules about gender colour so the use of pink is act of rebellion. For this reason, use of pink really made the placard stand out and it was created an aggressive effect. The hierarchy in design is focused on the ‘don’t’ which was the main purpose. We chose to keep it all same size and font. The pink cross did complete the design and other members of the group created their placard in the same style.

IMG_4028IMG_4029

The second placard which was screenprinted by me. I used the design I made from the previous week. However, I changed my idea earlier as we decided to use the placards created by the illustrators for the ‘blue is a gender colour. We used there design for that slogan but I decided to go back to ‘Tomboy’ quote. As it was a last minute decision, we had few problems such as the time. I had a day to do the screenprints and let it all dry. However, as I knew which design I wanted to do the process wasn’t as stressful. Firstly, I changed the design to from just one ‘tomboy’ text to use the repetition. The difference between two designs can be seen below. The right side the final design and left is the old version. The reason I made this change because I think screenprint looks really good with repetition, digitally it might not look as good as it looks crowded but on paper it could look different. My team mates agreed with the decision too. I did make some small changes such as the size of the text, I made it smaller so it doesn’t fill up all the space as I was going to paint on top of it.

tomboytomboy-final-design.jpg

I’m really happy with the placard I made I think visually it’s very strong and has the aggressive language of the protesters. On the photo the colour of the paint looks lighter but in real life it’s dark blue. I think using a hand painted detail really helped the final look of the design. Giving it the hand made effect which is the  main idea of the placards in the protests. I think the screenprint turned out good, it’s not neatly done which it fits in with the context. Some areas are lighter than others but I think overall it was a good outcome. I did agree with the David without the colour it didn’t fit in with the rest of the designs. As our main colours were black, white, blue, pink.

IMG_4036.jpg

This is the final version of my placard. I didn’t have time to paint the ‘and what’ text before the presentation but finished it the next day. I think the bold type really makes the text stand out especially on black background. The text ‘and what’ completed the poster and it needed colour as it looked very simple with lot of empty space. The contrast between colours creates a strong visual effect.

FINAL PLACARDS

I’m happy with all of our outcomes I think they all have similar features which completes the whole project. The presentation went really well as David liked the screenprints. As I didn’t have time I couldn’t finish off my placard it didn’t have the ‘and what’ paint which David said it needed colour. So the next day we added colour to the placard and I’m really happy with how it turned out.

STANLEY GREEN-PROTEIN MAN

We were asked to create a placard in his style but using our protest. I’ve mentioned about  his work in other post but I thought I should do more research and figure out the key features he includes in his placard.

Stanley Green is known for being a famous human billboard carrying his placard in Oxford Street. Green would walk around the street carrying his placard by himself. His placard was created by him, expressing his thoughts on protein. Looking at his placard, his style is very simple and clean. The use of words, he keeps them short and lists words. The use of white on black really stands out the text and eye catchy. The text fills the whole cardboard and there’s even extras stuck on the stick such as’ booklet 12p’. I made some research about his booklet which he wouldn’t charge for the booklet but would take donations. Visually his placard stands out, especially the way he uses the slogan ‘less lust from less protein’ .

stanleygreen1

Stanley also had a booklet which included all his work on protein ‘Eight passion proteins with care’. The red bold text is the first thing you look at as a reader and you can read the key point of the booklet which makes it easy to understand. The contrast is very strong as the use of light background and dark red really makes the text stand out.The use of red  and bold, heavy weight font makes the readers interested. Also, the layout is different as the position of the main text is right in the middle and there’s texts under and below it.

SCREENPRINT/MAKING PLACARDS

Today we did the screen-printing using the quote ‘Real men don’t wear pink’ using black paint. We made 2 copies which one of them we will cross over the word ‘don’t’ with red paint as that’s style we are going for the most of the placards. We made one screenprint and didn’t have the time for the second one which was going to be ‘tomboy’. So, I decided to paint it on the placard as seen in the photo. I wasn’t sure if I was happy with the outcome because I looked like there was something missing. As I decided, I was going to write ‘and what’ with paint but the white paint was really dry and it looked very streaky. So, I decided not to use that one and started making a new one with a different quote. This will be for the Stanley Green style using white on black. We decided to keep it clean and simple like this poster without any imagery. The quote I started doing was with ‘Blue is a gender colour’ in the style of Stanley Green.

IMG_3974IMG_3977

FINAL PLACARD DESIGN

I chose a design which I think I could develop and create some screenprints out of it. I chose the slogan ‘tomboy’ as it’s a common saying in society against women wearing masculine style especially blue tones as blue is seen as a male colour. It fits perfectly with our protest and out of all of the sayings I had listed it stood out as it was short and effective. The first design I had in mind was just tomboy written in white on background as I wanted to keep it clean and simple. I knew it would look better on screen print than digitally. However, I started to make more designs using different layouts and adding colour to it to see whether it would look better. The designs below I’ve used the font Multi display bold on Illustrator and used the repetition style to draw more attention to the design. I think this kind of symbolises how women hear these things from people daily. Repeating the words also creates a good contrast in black and white as it stands out more so I think this could work well with screenprint on black paper. Also, the other design I used colour which was in our colour scheme to match the rest of the work being created. Colour does look good and I let the words repeat end of the page and they change colour half way. I don’t know whether it would work on screenprint or it would create more effect but I think I will try both ways to see which one visually feels stronger.

tomboy 2tomboy 1

This design is the one I think would look really good on screenprint and I think I could do that ‘and what’ with paint brushes. This would create more hand made feel and doesn’t look digital as most placards used in protests are made my the protests. The meaning of ‘and what’ is going against the stereotype. I think the use of type and paint goes well together to  creates an aggressive style and which Davids feedback was to make it more aggressive. I decided to go with this design and make screenprints.  It’s useful to create digital versions and then change things around if needed.
